Henry: “I couldn’t do it, but you stopped the two monsters”

After The Best ceremony, Thierry Henry wanted to congratulate Lewandowski for beating ‘monsters’ Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Throughout his career, Thierry Henry was always aware of the two monsters who dominated the world of football for the last two decades. When he was in his prime, both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were barely starting their careers but sure did enjoy playing in their era. With Leo, Henry was part of that historic FC Barcelona side that won the treble in 2009.

Ronaldo is a very different story because Thierry Henry suffered many evenings when he still played for Manchester United. Cristiano was part of the squad that ended the legendary unbeaten run of the ‘Invincibles’ and he was always suffering his talent. Cut to today with Henry retired but still in awe of what another centre-forward accomplished. Robert Lewandowski did what he could never do during his best years in football.

Henry congratulates Lewandowski for his feat.

During a question round after receiving the award, Thierry Henry had a one-on-one with Lewandowski to congratulate him for the massive achievement: “First and foremost congratulations, I think it’s well deserved,” Henry said via the Daily Mail. “You were outstanding, you’ve been outstanding for a long time and to be able to finish in front of the two monsters you have to do something special. I couldn’t do it myself, so you’ve won something I never won. I respect that and you’ve been brilliant for a very long time so well done.

Robert responded by saying the following: “It was a very difficult season and a very difficult year but after lockdown we knew we had the chance to win the Champions League and to win everything. Nobody could compare with us. We were on fire. We were the team who wanted to be the best and wanted to stay on top. In an era with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win a trophy like that is something special.”
