Clubs around Europe are said to be keeping tabs on the situation of the Real Madrid skipper as he continues to face an uncertain future.

Dimitar Berbatov has encouraged Manchester United to sign Sergio Ramos saying the club “could do a lot worse” than bringing in the aging defender.

Ramos, as things stand, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

It is understood that Real Madrid’s unwillingness to offer a deal for more than one year to their long-serving player of 15 years is the biggest stumbling block in the contract negotiations.

This lack of progress has seen the highly-accomplished defender linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu with interest reported from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool.

Berbatov believes Manchester United should join the race to sign Ramos who is free to hold discussions with other teams to secure a transfer in 2020-21.

The ex-Red Devils striker told Betfair: “I have read the reports about Sergio Ramos and there is a lot of speculation about his future.

“He could bring a lot of experience and steel to any team. Although he is 34, he is still a top player and United could do a lot worse. If he is available I can see a lot of teams interested in signing him.

“At his age of course Real Madrid are reluctant to offer him a long contract. Maybe they are arguing about money because it always comes down to money, but both sides should think long and hard about it because the grass isn’t always greener.”
