Edouard Mendy is the primary reason why his side failed to snatch all three points from the Chelsea match-up, suggests Luke Shaw.
A stalemate at Old Trafford over the weekend saw Manchester United remain in the bottom half of the Premier League standings.
Neither team managed to breach the opposition defense throughout the 90 minutes. It wasn’t for the lack of trying that the home side failed to find the net- a total of 14 shots was taken by them – rather because of the brilliance of the Chelsea goalkeeper.
In the first half, Marcus Rashford, on being played through by Juan Mata, made a darting run before taking a strong low shot only to be denied by Edouard Mendy, who stuck out a boot to divert the ball away.
Mendy produced another moment of brilliance in the dying minutes as he made a flying save to yet again deny Rashford who had sent a curling shot from just outside the box.
The Senegalese shot-stopper was brought in to replace a certain error-prone Spaniard and he only made his case stronger to be Chelsea’s No.1 following his match-winning performance.
“Their keeper made wonderful saves at times. I was right behind it [Rashford’s shot] and, like I said, their keeper was very good today. He made a couple of very good saves that kept them in the game,” Luke Shaw told Man United’s official website.
“I feel like they didn’t really create much, and we did well in that aspect – but higher up the pitch, we should have maybe grabbed a goal, or maybe even two, and taken the three points.”
