Manchester United have looked vulnerable at the back at times, and Paul Scholes feels Dayot Upamecano could be the solution to that problem.
Just five games into the current Premier League campaign, Manchester United have already conceded 12 goals.
Man United backline have often looked rather unstable and their this weakness was exposed to the full against on matchday 2 against Tottenham – a game in which they let in four goals just in the first half and went on to lose 6-1.
With the team’s defensive frailties quite apparent, the Red Devils have been linked with the signing of a new center-back. And Dayot Upamecano is a name that has been generating much buzz among the United fanbase lately.
The 22-year old particularly impressed in the previous season, guiding RB Leipzig to a third-place Bundesliga finish and up to the semi-finals of the Champions League by being a rock in the heart of their defense.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got to get a close view of the highly-rated Frenchman in Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Leipzig in the Champions League.
A release clause of €42 million reportedly exists on Upamecano’s contract, and Paul Scholes has argued why it would be beneficial for his former side to activate it.
“This is the type of defender I think United need, he’s very different to Maguire and Lindelof,” Scholes explained of Upamecano, as per MEN.
“He absolutely loves one-on-ones, he loves getting down that channel because he knows he’s gonna beat them. It’s very much the same as what Rio used to do, what Jaap Stam used to do.
“It frees the rest of the team to worry about attacking play because you know you’ve got a center-half who is going to defend and he’ll do it all day.”
