Hargreaves explains why misfiring Werner is Chelsea’s best option up front

The striker has been unable to show the similar efficiency in front of goal that he had displayed in his final season in Bundesliga.

Timo Werner deserves much more credit than he actually gets, says Owen Hargreaves as he highlights the player’s importance to Chelsea’s playing style.

Chelsea splashed upwards of €50 million to bring in Werner, who had 34 goals in 45 appearances in 2019/20, from RB Leipzig.

The German marksman, however, has largely struggled to replicate those numbers in his debut season at Stamford Bridge. He has played 50 times in total this term but has managed only 12 goals.

As a result, the striker has endured much criticism from fans and critics alike, but an ex-Bayern Munich, Manchester United, and Manchester City midfielder feels his criticism isn’t justified.

“Everybody knows [Olivier] Giroud is a better finisher but would Chelsea be in the FA Cup final and the Champions League final if Giroud had started all those games? Probably not,” said Hargreaves, via Metro.

“Werner gives you so much other stuff in terms of his pressing and Thomas Tuchel is huge on that in terms of pressing and winning the ball back.

“He runs the channels, he can play off the left, he can play down the middle and he’s more versatile.”
