Today we celebrate the 34th birthday of Atletico Madrid striker Luis Suarez by taking a brief look back on his career story.

Luis Alberto Suarez Diaz has been one of the greatest players over the last decade following a glory-laden career at club and international level.

‘El Pistolero’ (The Gunfighter) remains one of the most prolific goalscorers on the planet, having scoring 11 goals in only 14 La Liga appearances for Atletico Madrid this season.

Suarez began his career as a youth player for Uruguayan side Nacional in 2003 before heading to the Netherlands three years later. The striker spent a season at Groningen before switching to Ajax, where he first made his name in Europe.

It took Suarez only 159 games to score a remarkable 111 goals for Ajax, paving the way for club and individual honors. Therefore, Liverpool signed him in a €26.5m deal in January 2011 to replace Fernando Torres.

Stepping into Torres’ boots at Anfield proved to be no problem at all. Suarez continued doing what he does best, managing 129 goal contributions (82 goals, 47 assists) in a three-and-a-half-year spell. He even finished tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for the 2013/14 European Golden Shoe.

A dream €81.72m move to Barcelona followed in 2014. Suarez instantly settled into his new surroundings, forming the famous ‘MSN’ attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar to steer the club to 13 major honors. These included four La Liga titles and a Champions League crown.

Suarez, who ended Messi and Ronaldo’s six-year hold of the European Golden Shoe in 2015/16, also became Uruguay’s all-time leading goalscorer and famously helped the national team win the 2011 Copa America.

Now into 2021, a 34-year-old Suarez plays for Atletico Madrid and hopes to help the club win a first La Liga title in seven seasons.

Everyone here on Ace Football wishes Luis a happy 34th birthday and all the best for the upcoming year.
