Today we celebrate the 58th birthday of Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho by taking a brief look back on his career story.
Jose Mario dos Santos Mourinho Felix is one of the most decorated football managers in history, having enjoyed glory-laden spells across four different nations, and is regarded as an all-time great.
After an uneventful playing career as a midfielder, the 58-year-old got his first taste of management as a youth coach for Portuguese club Vitoria Setubal in 1987 upon leaving his post as a school coach.
He later hit the jackpot by becoming both an interpreter and assistant for the late Sir Bobby Robson. The pair enjoyed a fruitful partnership at Sporting CP, Porto, and even FC Barcelona. A spell under Louis van Gaal at Camp Nou followed. Mourinho then became a head coach himself in 2000 at Benfica.
After impressing in brief spells at Benfica and Uniao de Leiria, the Portuguese returned to Porto in 2002. This was when he made his name by leading the club to six titles, including the UEFA Cup and Champions League. Chelsea came knocking on his door afterward, giving birth to the man who famously dubbed himself ‘The Special One’.
Mourinho coached the Blues across two successful stints until 2015 and has strengthened his reputation by winning titles across Europe. From leading Inter to a historic treble, tasting domestic success with Real Madrid, and even winning the Europa League at Manchester United, he is indeed a one of a kind manager.
The one-time FIFA World Coach winner now coaches Tottenham in the Premier League. He is tasked with ending the club’s 13-year trophy drought.
If anybody can do it, it’s Mourinho.
Everyone here on Ace Football wishes Jose a happy 58th birthday and all the best for the upcoming year.
