Today we celebrate the 60th birthday of England legend Gary Lineker by taking a brief look back on his career story.

Gary Lineker may be better known for being a sports broadcaster than an ex-footballer these days, but his exploits on the pitch have been by no means forgotten.

The 60-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest English strikers in history, with a goals-to-games ratio of 0.60 for the national team. He stands third on the all-time scorer’s list on 48 goals in 80 caps behind Bobby Charlton (49) and Wayne Rooney (53).

Lineker was also the first and only Englishman to win a World Cup Golden Boot in 1986 until Harry Kane did so in 2018.

In his club career, meanwhile, Lineker played for three English clubs in Leicester City, Everton, and Tottenham. He won the FA Cup with the latter and finished top-scorer in the top-flight for all of them. Nobody in English football history has emulated this feat so far.

The striker also enjoyed a superb three-season stint at Barcelona, winning his first major honors and scoring 48 goals in 128 games.

Since retiring in Japan back in 1994, Lineker has been inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame and became famed for his punditry roles – especially in BBC’s Match of the Day programme.

Everyone here on Ace Football wishes Gary a happy 60th birthday and all the best for the upcoming year.
