Denmark clinched the second and final last-16 spot in Group D of the Women’s World Cup by beating Haiti 2-0 in Perth, Australia.
In a thrilling final Group D fixture, Denmark dominated. The Danes had the lion’s share of ball possession and numerous goalscoring opportunities. Captain Pernille Harder led the charge with a clinical 21st-minute penalty kick, putting her nation ahead. Even though Denmark had numerous other goals disallowed for offside, they finally got their second when Sanne Troelsgaard Nielsen scored in injury-time.
With that, Denmark finished as Group D runners-up, three points behind England. They will next face the tournament co-hosts, Group D winners Australia, in the last-16 this Sunday in Sydney.
On the other hand, Haiti’s hopes for a first-ever Women’s World Cup goal were dashed yet again. They lost to a spot-kick goal for the third consecutive match. The tournament may be over for them now, but their determination and spirit never wavered throughout all three games.
