Ahead of another semifinal with Manchester City, Pep Guardiola wanted to remind people the solid advice he got from the late Johan Cruyff.
Pep Guardiola is possibly Johan Cruyff’s most advanced student, he might’ve already surpassed him in terms of success. Although the Dutch former coach left a huge legacy behind him, the exploits on the pitch are on Guardiola’s side. With two UEFA Champions League titles already under his belt, Pep already accomplished everything Johan always dreamed of. Back when he was still alive, he used to give Pep a lot of great advice.
During moments like tomorrow, Pep always likes to remember what Johan told him before big games like this one. To those who remember Cruyff, you already know he tried to always keep his enjoyment of life at a high level. When these types of moments came, he always wanted to enjoy them rather than stress himself. At the highest level, the result can really go to any side and losing is something that is always expected.
Cruyff’s advice to Guardiola.
Pep recalls that Cruyff always asked Guardiola to enjoy the moment at this stage of the competition. This is what Pep said as picked up by Marca: “I’m not Johan Cruyff but the sentiment will be the same. Enjoy the coffee in the airport terminal before the flight to Paris. Enjoy the luxury of the hotel in the French capital. Enjoy the walk with teammates on the day of the game. Most of all, enjoy having the eyes of the world on you.
“Enjoy the responsibility, the pressure, enjoy the fact that maybe you won’t live more this kind of situation. This is the elite. The top players enjoy the situations because they take responsibility. That’s why the greatest clubs win these competitions because they play these competitions as a friendly game. That’s what I want to see in my team and that’s what we’ll try to do.”
