After Manchester City’s 20th consecutive victory in the Premier League, Pep Guardiola reacted to this win against West Ham United.
Pep Guardiola is thrilled his players are responding well after today’s victory against West Ham United. The Citizens are now 20 matches with nothing but wins in all competitions, a streak Pep only knew during his time at FC Barcelona. Although his players are responding well to this level of pressure, Guardiola knows he needs to keep pushing them. Looking at how the rest of the European giants are doing right now, we can safely say Manchester City are the strongest football club in the world at the moment.
But Pep is aware of how quickly the tide can change for them, which is why he chooses to not get overconfident. In fact, it was reported he gave his players a passionate speech during halftime in order to keep them focused. In the end, City got the victory they wanted and the pressure just keeps piling up for them. After the match, Guardiola wanted to reflect on how important this number is during modern times in football.
Pep is amazed by what his players are doing.
“Twenty in this period, in this era, with this situation around the world, to be able to do 20 is maybe one of the greatest achievements we have done together in our careers,” Guardiola said via the Daily Mail. ‘It is so difficult. A game every three days, with Covid situations, injury situations. Winning shows a mental strength. What we have done so far is unusual, an exception. After 10-15 minutes today we realized that we are not going to paint anything beautiful. In the second half we were much better than the first half. When you play a lot of games, in the league and then the Champions League, this is normal. We were lucky to get all three points. The mathematics matter at the end of the season. There are many of these games. We didn’t create much but we didn’t concede anything.
“It was really tough, difficult because the opponent is incredibly composed and they have everything. It is a big compliment for West Ham. Mentally it is tough (for the players) because there are games every three days. People start to get tired. That’s why it is important to have two days off before the game against Manchester United next weekend, rest a little bit, don’t see each other. We played almost two days ago. At 9 pm on Wednesday and 12:30 pm today. That’s why you have to do many substitutions or change the team from the last game. If you don’t, then you cannot sustain it. Big teams, big clubs, have to do this. Now we think about Wolves, a team we’ve suffered against in recent years.”
