The Sky Blues want to tie down their playmaker to fresh terms but apparently, the two parties are struggling to reach an agreement.

Pep Guardiola is “pretty sure” Kevin De Bruyne will put pen to paper on a new contract with Manchester City.

De Bruyne signed a five-year contract with Man City only in 2018, but the club wants to reward the 2019-20 PFA Players’ Player of the Year with a new and improved deal.

There have been talks, however, that the Belgium international has turned down an initial approach regarding a renewal. As reported by The Times, he was unhappy with the terms offered to him.

Amid the negative speculations, despite admitting that he is in the dark regarding De Bruyne’s contract situation, Guardiola remains optimistic.

“I’m pretty sure that he will stay but at the same time we have to respect the process,” the Man City boss told Sky Sports.

“I don’t know what’s going on because I didn’t speak with Txiki [Begiristain, Man City director of football] but he knows how we perceive him – not just as a football player, but as a person, how important he is for the club. But I’m not worried.

“At the end it’s his decision and hopefully it’s going to finish well.”

De Bruyne has been influential as ever for Manchester City this season, racking up three goals and 12 assists combined in the Premier League and Champions League so far.
