Pep Guardiola is keen on continuing his tenure at Manchester City but insists he must have to ‘deserve’ a contract extension.

Manchester City suffered a horrendous Premier League campaign in 2019/20 by their usual standards, finishing second by an embarrassing 18-point margin.

Their Champions League season was a disappointment as well as they were knocked out at the quarter-finals stage by underdogs Olympique Lyon.

Pep Guardiola used a different tactic against Lyon and was heavily criticized after the loss for experimenting in a game of such magnitude.

Guardiola was also aimed by critics for yet again failing to guide the team to European glory despite having made huge investments over the years.

The former FC Barcelona boss signed a three-year deal with Man City after joining them in 2016 before agreeing to terms for an extra year in 2018. And with him having entered the final year of his contract, talks have been surfacing regarding his future.

“I would love to stay longer here,” said Guardiola, as per BBC. “It is a place I love to be but I have to deserve it. This club achieved standards in the last decade but we have to maintain that.

“They [the Man City board] didn’t tell me you have to do this or that, they told me to play. But I know the standards of the club and if I don’t achieve the standards, I probably don’t deserve so I have to win to extend my contract.”
