Antoine Griezmann has been handed the number seven jersey by Barcelona for his second season at Camp Nou.

Barcelona have given Antoine Griezmann his preferred no.7 shirt ahead of the new season.

The French forward had to settle for the ’17’ jersey for his debut campaign. Having worn the no.7 jersey at Atletico Madrid and also for France to date, the number was not available at the time.

A certain Philippe Coutinho occupied the no.7 slot at the time and Griezmann eventually settled for ’17’.

Phillipe Coutinho is back at Barca but the club have decided to grant the Frenchman his wish.

Speaking back in March, Griezmann said as per the Barcelona website: “I would like to get the number 7 shirt back”

That has come to pass and the Catalan giants revealed the jersey number change via a statement on their website on Friday afternoon.

“Antoine Griezmann will wear the number 7 shirt for FC Barcelona this coming season, following in the footsteps of stars such as [David] Villa, Pedro, [Henrik] Larsson and [Javier] Saviola,”

“The number 7 was occupied by Philippe Coutinho at that time, meaning he could not maintain the squad number he had worn at Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid.”

Griezmann scored 15 goals in 48 appearances for Barca in the 2019/20 season.

Perhaps a change to his preferred number would see him return to the devastating forward he once was.
