Antoine Griezmann could be considered the type of ‘cavalry’ that Liverpool need in their squad, says Stan Collymore.

Jurgen Klopp has done a spectacular job in forming a star-studded squad at Anfield capable of ending Liverpool’s 30-year wait for league glory and winning the illustrious Champions League.

Like last summer, however, the Reds have made little investment in new recruits. They’re only signing to date is Olympiacos left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas in a €13m deal.

Although the club spent heavily between 2016 and 2019 in bringing in stars such as Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah, and countless others. So it’s understandable why things have cooled down lately.

But Collymore believes more reinforcements are necessary for the upcoming season and welcomed rumors of a surprise move for Barcelona’s Griezmann.

The ex-Reds striker told the Mirror: “The question heading into the new season has to be whether Liverpool have enough players to turn what is clearly a very good team into a generational team like the Manchester United side of the nineties and noughties.

“United boss Sir Alex Ferguson created a dynasty by constantly freshening things up with marquee signings. Liverpool haven’t yet done that.

“Signings like that say: ‘This is a test for you in the dressing-room now.’ Compare that to the message Liverpool’s dressing room has received with the arrival of only full-back Konstantinos Tsimikas in the summer and Takumi Minamino in January.

“That’s why I like the Antoine Griezmann rumor – if Liverpool were to get the French international striker then the dressing room would be thinking the cavalry had finally arrived.

“But if you don’t have that you start thinking: ‘Hang on, we might yet lose Gini Wijnaldum, we haven’t really brought anyone in, can we push on?’”

Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara appears to be a likely new recruit for Liverpool before the transfer deadline on October 5.
