On Tuesday evening, news emerged that Diego Maradona required emergency surgery on his brain. We have an update on that story.
Diego Maradona has undergone successful brain surgery to remove a blood clot.
The football icon suffered a subdural hematoma, a serious condition where blood collects between the skull and the surface of the brain. This is most times caused by a head injury.
Maradona was initially admitted to a hospital in La Plata on Monday for anemia and dehydration. At the time, Luque commented that the Argentine had been a little bit ‘sick’ for a while.
His condition had been said to be improving and it was even suggested that the Gimnasia boss could be released from hospital on Wednesday. Sadly, it then emerged on Tuesday night that he required emergency brain surgery.
Fans of Maradona have been gathering outside the Ipensa clinic in La Plata since their idol was admitted earlier this week.
Thankfully, the surgery has been done and it appears Maradona is in stable condition at the moment.
“We managed to successfully remove the clot. Diego coped well with the surgery,” doctor Leopoldo Luque said in a latest update to local media.
“It’s under control, there’s a little drainage (of blood). He’ll remain under observation.”
That piece of news will come as a relief to the Argentines and football contingent all over regarding a player who many deem as the greatest ever to grace the sport.
We can only wish him a speedy recovery at this point and hopefully he is discharged from hospital soon as well
