Liverpool have adequate squad depth and are mentally well prepared to defend their Premier League title, insists Joe Gomez.
The start to 2020/21 was not exactly according to Liverpool’s scripts as they missed out on the chance to mark it with a silverware.
This year’s Community Shield final proved to be a repeat of the 2019 one for the Reds – only this time it was Arsenal who got the better of them, as opposed to Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s men appear to have taken their foot off the gas ever since they were crowned as the Premier League champions last season.
In the immediate match after their coronation, they lost 4-0 to Manchester City, managed only a stalemate against Burnley a few weeks later, and then suffered another defeat to Arsenal.
That dip in form saw them narrowly miss out on the chance to claim the record for highest points total in a season in English top-flight.
Defender Joe Gomez does not deny that his side’s performance levels took a dive in the final weeks of last season. However, he is confident that Liverpool will be able to hit the ground running when the new league season kicks off on September 12.
“Obviously it was a short break and then we had the restart and then the period when we switched off for a couple of weeks and that was that,” Gomez told the club’s official website.
“But I think more than anything, the gaffer instills in us that it’s a mental battle more than physical half the time. So we’ll be ready and we have a squad full of quality to rotate when needs be.
“The main thing is, mentally we are ready to go, and I think everyone is hungrier than ever.”
