Ace Football previews the DFB Pokal match between Gladbach and Dortmund, and offers betting tips, odds, line-ups, and team news.
Borussia Monchengladbach and Borussia Dortmund lock horns for the third time this season in a DFB-Pokal quarter-final clash on Tuesday night.
The German cup competition is perhaps the most realistic chance either side have of claiming silverware this season. Both clubs are effectively out of the Bundesliga title battle and aren’t expected to progress far in the Champions League knockouts. So, with this in mind, they could throw everything into this match at Borussia-Park.
This fixture usually promises goals, with Gladbach winning 4-2 in the last meeting back in January at the same venue. It’s produced over 3.5 goals in the previous four matches, and both teams scored on three occasions.
Borussia Monchengladbach Form & Stats
After a disappointing 2-0 Champions League defeat to Manchester City, Gladbach responded by taking an early two-goal lead at RB Leipzig on Saturday. But a disastrous second-half performance saw the hosts score three times to snatch a 3-2 comeback win courtesy of goals from Christopher Nkunku, Yussuf Poulsen, and Alexander Sorloth.
It condemned Gladbach to a third successive defeat in all competitions, and a fourth one in five games (D1). Their promising winter form is over. They’re now down in ninth-place in the Bundesliga and have one foot outside the door in the Champions League. The pressure will be on, therefore, to salvage their DFB-Pokal campaign.
Manager Marco Rose, who will jump ship to Dortmund in the summer, insists winning the club’s fourth title in the competition is a priority. He has promised squad rotations for Tuesday, but confirmed his ‘cup keeper’ Tobias Sippel will start ahead of his No.1 Yann Sommer in the goal.
Key Team Stats
- Lost 4 of their last 5 games in all competitions (D1).
- Lost their last home 3 games in all competitions.
- Last won a game against Stuttgart on February 3.
- Over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 DFB-Pokal games.
Borussia Dortmund Form & Stats
The four-time DFB-Pokal winners are on a three-match winning run following a 3-0 triumph over Arminia Bielefeld last weekend. Mahmoud Dahoud, Jadon Sancho, and Reinier were all on target at Signal Iduna Park.
This upturn in form has boosted Dortmund’s bids for a Champions League quarter-final spot and a top-four finish in the Bundesliga. And, provided they defeat Gladbach on Tuesday, a chance of DFB-Pokal glory is a possibility. Especially as the cup-holders Bayern Munich are already out of the competition.
Dortmund’s away form, however, has been inconsistent. They’ve won six times and lost on five occasions in 11 Bundesliga outings and suffered a 4-2 thrashing at Gladbach at the end of January. But with the likes of Haaland and Sancho back to their best, the visitors are in a hopeful mood.
Key Team Stats
- Won their last 3 games in all competitions.
- Won 12 of their last 13 games against Gladbach in all competitions (L1).
- Over 2.5 goals in their last 9 games in all competitions.
- BTTS in 10 of their last 12 away games in all competitions.
- Reached the DFB-Pokal final 5 times in the last 9 seasons.
- Erling Haaland has managed 6 goals and 3 assists in his last 6 games in all competitions.
- Jadon Sancho has provided an assist in each of his last 3 games and scored 3 goals as well.
