Olivier Giroud already has his eyes on Thierry Henry’s record after surpassing Michel Platini as France;s second all-time top scorer.
Olivier Giroud got his 41st and 42nd goals for Les Bleus in Wednesday’s 7-1 thrashing of Ukraine in a friendly match at Stade de France.
The Chelsea forward has surpassed Michel Platini on the list and is now behind only former Arsenal and Barcelona star Henry, who scored 51 in 123 games.
Giroud needs only nine more goals to become the joint-top scorer for Les Bleus and the forward admits he already has the milestone in mind.
It was a good way for the 34-year-old to mark his 100th cap for France. Even better that it was in front of his idol now Ukraine coach, Andriy Shevchenko.
“I feel a lot of pride, it’s a great honour for me and I’m happy it happened for my 100th cap,” Giroud said as quoted by the Independent.
“I’m happy I did it in front of Shevchenko, he was one of my favourite players, if not my favourite player when I was a teenager,” the Blues forward said of the former AC Milan, Chelsea and Ukraine striker, winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2004.
“Obviously, I’m hugely proud,” Giroud continued: “It’s a great honour [to reach 100 caps] and I’m very happy that it happened like this.
“It was always going to be emotional. It’s a friendly match but it’s still my hundredth, so I’m very happy for me and for the team as well. We showed a lot of good things.
Asked whether he was going for the 51-goal mark, he added:
“There’s no limit. You have to set yourself goals. Let’s see when I reach 46, 47 goals.”
Giroud has another chance to add more to his goals for France when Les Blues take on Portugal in the Nations League on Sunday.
