Gianfranco Zola believes Juventus have made the right choice by appointing inexperienced Andrea Pirlo as a new head coach.
Juventus relieved Maurizio Sarri of his duties earlier in the summer following a disappointing Champions League campaign.
Instead of going for a coach with a proven pedigree, the Bianconeri opted to throw Andrea Pirlo into a hot seat. The 41-year-old has only recently moved into the realm of management.
Indeed, Pirlo initially teamed up the Turin side as a youth academy coach. But, the premature departure of Sarri prompted the former Italian midfielder to accept the coveted spot in the dugout.
Zola, who spent 2018/19 as Sarri’s assistant, feels sorry for the ex-Napoli manager.
“I’m a little sorry for him [Sarri] and his group. I worked with hem for a year at Chelsea, and it was very important for me,” he said, as per Football-Italia.
“We talked about it with Maurizio, that Juventus are a demanding team and sometimes, it’s not even enough to win.
“There are many requirements that must be met.”
Zola flopped as a head coach at West Ham, Watford, and Cagliari. Yet, he knows what kind of challenges Pirlo has to overcome to succeed as a manager.
“I went to West Ham without ever having coached, and I know what that means,” he added.
“We are talking about a champion [Pirlo] who had superior knowledge of the game.
“Andrea must grow up quickly. Choosing him was very courageous, and it could become a brilliant move.”
