The Ghanaian striker collapsed on the pitch during a game in the Albanian top flight.
The football world is in mourning following the tragic passing of Ghanaian striker Raphael Dwamena at the age of 28.
Dwamena tragically collapsed on the pitch during a league match in Albania, where he was playing for Egnatia against Partizani. The incident happened in the 24th minute, with fellow players and medics rushing to his aid.
The game was promptly postponed as medical professionals worked to assist Dwamena. Despite their efforts, however, the Albania Football Federation later confirmed his passing in a statement.
Since making his debut for Ghana in 2017, Dwamena made a total of eight appearances for the Black Stars, scoring two goals.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) responded to the heartbreaking news with a statement on Saturday.
“The Ghana Football Association is saddened by the death of our former player Raphael Dwamena and wishes to express our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time,” GFA’s statement reads.
While no specific cause has been disclosed, it’s notable that Dwamena had previously experienced a similar collapse in 2021 while playing for the Austrian team Blau-Weiss Linz. He underwent a heart operation and had an automatic defibrillator implanted following that incident. Despite this, he continued his career, playing for several prominent teams, including La Liga sides Zaragoza and Levante.
Zaragoza, where Dwamena rose to prominence, expressed devastation at his passing, posting on social media a heartfelt tribute to their former player.
“We are devastated by the sad news of the passing of our former player Raphael Dwamena. You will always be in the memory of Zaragoza’s fans. Rest in peace,” the club’s statement reads.
