Real Madid put out a lacklustre display as they dropped valuable points in the La Liga title race, following a stalemate against Getafe.
Real Madrid missed out on yet another chance to close the gap on leaders Atletico Madrid to one point as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by relegation-threatened Getafe. The result means Barcelona can overtake Los Blancos if they win their outstanding game.
Casemiro and Nacho Fernandez missed out through suspension, while injuries and a hectic schedule of late forced Zinedine Zidane to rotate his squad. The likes of Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos were rested.
Getafe missed out on a big chance to closest to break the deadlock in the first half. Jaime Mata struck the woodwork with Thibaut Courtois clearly beaten. On the opposite end, Mariano Diaz also had a goal disallowed for offside and saw another of his efforts cleared off the line.
In a bid to shake things up, Benzema was introduced off the bench in the second half with 20-year-old Antonio Blanco also given his La Liga debut as a substitute. Regardless, Real Madrid still struggled to create opportunities as they were held to a goalless draw.
Los Blancos dominated the possession all day but the injuries were evident as they could only manage two shots on target all evening against a spirited Getafe side.
Neither team could find the goal they wanted and it ended with both sides sharing the spoils. The result leaves Jose Bordalas’ outfit one point better off in their battle against the drop.
Elsewhere, it doesn’t do Zidane and company much good as well as they aim to close down and perhaps overtake their city rivals.
