It is the underperforming players and not the manager that is the source of the Gunners’ troubles, according to Jamie Carragher.

There seems to be no end to Arsenal’s misery this season, but Jamie Carragher feels the club should keep trusting Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal are enduring another woeful campaign as even Europa League qualification seems too much to ask for.

On Saturday, the Gunners suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of champions Liverpool that left them down at 10th in the Premier League table – 10 points behind fourth-placed West Ham and seven points behind sixth-placed Tottenham.

Pressure continues to pile on Arteta who had a promising start to his managerial career at the Emirates but is massively struggling to deliver on the expectations in his second season.

However, Carragher believes the Spaniard is not the root of Arsenal’s problems and has called on the club to move one of several of their senior players.

“It’s going to take a lot of pain for Arsenal,” said the former Liverpool defender speaking on Sky Sports‘ Monday Night Football.

“It’s the players, get rid of them. Stick with Arteta and get the young players in the team.

“Has [Alexandre] Lacazette ever really been the answer? No. Willian has been a disaster of a signing.

“Nicolas Pepe, it’s not his age or his price tag, really, he’s just not good enough and never will be good enough, so Arsenal need to cut their losses there.”
