Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso says there are no excuses at all as his side lost by a 2-0 scoreline to high-flying Sassuolo at home.

Gattuso says Napoli must take full responsibility for their loss after a 2-0 defeat on home turf at the hands of Sassuolo.

This is the second defeat the Partenopei have recorded at the Stadio San Paolo this season already. The other came in the Europa League at the hands of AZ Alkmaar.

Napoli felt they should have been awarded a penalty late in the game after Victor Osimhen’s shirt was pulled in the box.

Sassuolo continued their impressive start to the season and remain one of the only three unbeaten sides in Serie A this term.

Gattuso says his side have no excuses and can only look to be better.

“We had many chances, we didn’t convert them, we could’ve done more and there’s no point standing here talking about whether it was a penalty or not. That’s the way they saw it, we have to focus on the game,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“These incidents can happen, it’s not my job to judge the referee. I judge the team and I say we could’ve done better. Sassuolo are a side that make you run hard and we were too frenetic. We were naive on their penalty, we should focus first on being solid and getting the goal later.”

“We had many chances, Sassuolo are a side that allow you those spaces, but we didn’t have enough quality in our passing. When it was still 0-0, the team gave off the sensation it could score a goal and I don’t recall us being particularly troubled before then.”

“If you don’t press Sassuolo well, then Boga and Traore can cause real problems. Our tempo was too slow when Sassuolo had the ball. We have to keep working, keep improving, finding a way to give Osimhen better service.”

Napoli will now aim to return to winning ways when they take on HNK Rijeka in the Europa League on Thursday.
