Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart believes Barcelona fans and members should be grateful to Lionel Messi after his u-turn.

To the delight of the Barcelona hierarchy and fans, Lionel Messi will remain at the Camp Nou for one more season at least.

After trying to force his way out of the club the past week, the Barca captain let down his guard and decided to let peace reign.

Messi shared his own side of the scenario in a revealing interview that saw him hit out at the club’s board.

All is well for now at least with the 33-year-old ready to carry on with the club he expressed his love for.

After his latest u-turn, a section of fans are convinced Messi was wrong and tried to hold the club to ‘ransom’.

But ex-Barca president doesn’t agree. For a player of La Pulga’s calibre, Gaspart believes the player had the right to call the shots and the club should be thankful to him for his stay.

“I don’t care what he said in the statement,” Gaspart told Marca.

“I don’t care – what’s important to me is that he’s staying.

“He’s put himself at the same level as [Alfredo] Di Stefano at Real Madrid.

“How problems start isn’t important.

“What is important is how they’re solved and I’m delighted that he doesn’t want to fight with the club.

“The club consists of 160,000 people and they have to be grateful for what he’s done.”

With a new season just around the corner, the question is just how motivated will Messi be for Barcelona on the pitch?
