The former Red Devils defender gave his assessment of the squad and its potential in the Premier League this season.
Gary Neville has cast doubt on Manchester United’s prospects in the Premier League, predicting that they will fail to secure a top-five finish this season.
Despite a stellar 2-1 comeback win against Brentford, United currently rank 10th in the Premier League. They’ve lost four of their eight league games (W4 D0). The gap between them and the top-four is five points, with still another 30 matches to go.
“I don’t think Manchester United will finish in the top five this season. I think they are way off it,” Neville remarked on the ‘Gary Neville Podcast‘.
Before the season began, Neville had United down for a third-place finish. Yet, given the team’s recent performances and unsettled goalkeeper situation, he has changed his mind.
“I don’t think the goalkeeper [Andre Onana] is settled in,” the pundit continued.
“I think he should have saved the one yesterday [against Brentford], so that is a problem.”
In contrast, Chelsea, who sit a point behind United in 11th, have better prospects than the Red Devils.
“Chelsea, I think are probably nearer to it if they can go on a run” Neville added.
“They have got some really good young talented players. Their age is a lot better than United’s squad.”
