Gary Neville singled out United’s captain for criticism after the embarrassing derby defeat.
Gary Neville has criticized Bruno Fernandes for not fulfilling his role as Manchester United’s leader.
Manchester City comfortably defeated United 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Erling Haaland netting twice and Phil Foden adding a third. The first half saw some competition, but City’s dominance prevailed after the break, leaving the hosts struggling to make an impact.
In the dying moments, frustration bubbled over as some United players displayed aggression, with captain Bruno Fernandes and substitute Antony both getting involved in quarrels with City players.
Antony’s wild kick at City’s Jeremey Doku drew sharp criticism, with Neville saying on Sky Sports: “He’s right, Doku, he’s absolutely right. Antony just had a kick at him, absolutely right Doku. United have lost their discipline, it starts with their captain.”
Neville went on to criticize Fernandes, who started tackling more aggressively as United gave up on mounting a comeback.
“I’ve had enough of Fernandes throwing his arms around at his team-mates; I’ve had enough of him not running back; he whinges at everybody,” the Man United legend added.
“He got pushed in the chest and went down holding his face. He’s got to put a captain’s performance in out there and that wasn’t a captain’s performance by a Manchester United player.”
United will return to action with a Carabao Cup game against Newcastle on Wednesday.
