The Brazil international’s versatility has been an asset for an injury-hit Arsenal team this season, allowing him to play in multiple positions in the attack.

Gabriel Jesus signed for Arsenal with the intention of playing as a No.9, but he is willing to play wherever manager Mikel Arteta deems fit.

Jesus has been a pivotal figure in the squad since his €52.2 million arrival from Manchester City in 2022. This season, he has showcased his versatility, featuring in various attacking positions in the middle and on the flanks.

His change in role has been influenced by injuries to his teammates. These include Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard.

“When I chose to move from City to Arsenal, [sporting director] Edu and Arteta spoke to me. I made it clear that I’d like to play 9,” Jesus said at a press conference.

“That was Arsenal’s idea, for me to play 9, loose.

“This season has been different, we’ve had injuries, and in the last few games I’ve played three up front. For a while, I thought I’d just say I wanted to play 9, but I’m here to help the team.

“I prefer not to choose.”

In 2023/24, Jesus has made nine appearances in all competitions. Notably, the 26-year-old has found the net three times in four games as a center-forward. He has yet to score when deployed in wide positions.

Despite the tactical adjustments, Arsenal have performed impressively this season. The Gunners rank second in the Premier League standings with an unbeaten record and 20 points from eight games.

Jesus is currently on international duty, preparing for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay.
