The Citizens are eager to sign a new midfielder after their unsuccessful bid for Rice.

Manchester City are reportedly eyeing a summer move for Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.

The Citizens decided to pull out of the transfer race for West Ham’s Declan Rice after Arsenal submitted a £105m offer earlier this week.

Compared to Rice, Veiga is a lesser-known player who is yet to test his qualities at an elite-level club. However, the Spaniard has developed into one of the most promising midfielders in La Liga.

Who is Gabri Veiga?

Veiga is a 21-year-old midfielder who has played for Celta Vigo since joining their youth side in 2018.

The Spanish youngster signed his first senior contract at the club last summer, but it took him only a few months to secure a regular spot in Carlos Carvalhal’s lineup.

During his brilliant breakthrough campaign, Veiga made 36 league appearances for Celta. His record of 11 goals and four assists in La Liga was also impressive as a central midfielder.

Veiga’s standout performance came in Celta’s final match of the season, where he scored a brace against Barcelona. Since then, the Spaniard’s performances in the UEFA European U21 Championship have attracted interest from a number of elite sides.

Who are City’s rivals for Veiga?

City might face stiff competition in their pursuit of Veiga, with Liverpool and Chelsea also pushing to sign the midfielder.

The Reds have reportedly held meetings with Veiga’s representatives, hoping to complete a permanent move for the 21-year-old. Suitors will most likely focus on negotiating with the player’s camp as they are open to paying his £34m release clause.
