Two outstanding footballers have been named winners of the highly sought-after Footballer of the Year awards by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA).
The FWA has awarded the men’s and women’s Footballer of the Year awards to Erling Haaland and Sam Kerr respectively.
The prestigious FWA awards, voted on by the exclusive group of 800 members, officially unveiled the winners for its categories on Friday.
Haaland dominated the men’s award. The Manchester City striker won by a landslide 82% – the biggest winning margin recorded in Premier League history.
It came in light of a remarkable debut campaign at City, with Haaland managing 51 goals and eight assists in 47 games across all competitions. Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka finished behind him in second place. Gunners captain Martin Odegaard ended up third in the polls. Haaland’s City teammate Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford rounded off the top five.
Kerr, on the other hand, has become the first back-to-back winner of the women’s edition. The Chelsea forward has 20 goals in 21 games to her name this season.
She will collect her award, alongside Haaland, at the Landmark Hotel London on May 25. The FWA will host a special dinner at the venue to mark the 75th anniversary of the FWA award.
