Gary Neville has offered his support to the Dutch midfielder amid claims of unpaid wages.

Frenkie de Jong should consider legal action against Barcelona if rumors of unpaid wages are true, according to Gary Neville.

Reports have surfaced recently claiming Barcelona owe De Jong €17 million from a restructured contract. It’s said to have delayed the midfielder’s potential transfer to Premier League side Manchester United.

De Jong would be entitled to the full €17 million salary if he fulfills the contract, which he had altered to help Barca through their financial issues during the COVID-19 crisis. It runs until June 2026. However, given Barcelona’s attempts to sell him, the player’s representatives believe he should get the unpaid wages now.

“De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him!” former Manchester United defender Neville wrote on Twitter.

“A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach. FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.”

Will De Jong leave Barca?

Barcelona reportedly have a transfer agreement in place with Manchester United, worth around €85 million, for the former Ajax midfielder.

But the club’s president, Joan Laporta, has said he intends to speak with De Jong and clarify each other’s situation first. He has also denied accepting any offers at the moment.

“He’s our player and we like him a lot,” Laporta told ESPN during the LaLiga side’s pre-season tour of the United States.

“We’ve had offers for Frenkie, but we’re not accepting them at the moment. We want to talk to him and to find out exactly what it is that he wants. We need to clarify some aspects of the situation.”
