A roaring 60,000 crowd at the Puskas Arena could’ve witnessed one of the biggest Euro shocks if not for Antoine Griezmann.
Hungary and France both settled for a point in what was a pulsating fixture in round 2 of Euro 2020 Group F.
Hungary stunned their superior guests moments before the referee blew for half-time as they scored completely against the run of play. Attila Fiola skimmed through the opposition defense following a quick one-two with Rolland Sallai before slotting the ball in at the near post, sending the home fans on cloud nine.
France had looked in control of the match before conceding but were rather inefficient in front of goal, with Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappe, and Antoine Griezmann all guilty of wasting chances.
Substitute Ousmane Dembele came close to equalizing in the second half as he unleashed a left-footed effort goalwards from a tight angle after some lovely footwork only to hit the post.
It was Dembele’s Barcelona teammate Antoine Griezmann who finally leveled the scoreline. Kylian Mbappe used all his pace to collect a galloping ball from Hugo Lloris before laying it across the face of goal, and Griezmann was there to knock it in from eight yards.
The 1-1 result helps France provisionally top the group as Portugal could leapfrog them with a win against Germany.
As for Hungary, they sit at third place with one point.
