France smashed Australia in their World Cup opener with a brilliant attacking display.

France defeated Australia 4-1 in their World Cup game on Tuesday. Olivier Giroud equalled Thierry Henry’s record as France’s all-time top scorer as the title defenders made a strong start to the tournament.

No Benzema, no problem!

France kicked off their World Cup campaign without Karim Benzema, who missed the tournament with a thigh injury.

Australia stunned the World champions with a quick opener in the ninth minute. But Les Bleus then managed to find their attacking rhythm and start attacking from both flanks.

A goal from Adrien Rabiot equalized the game in the 27th minute before Giroud completed France’s comeback five minutes later.

France restarted their attacks as soon as the second period started. Australia remained inside their own half but couldn’t prevent Kylian Mbappe from adding his name to the scoresheet.

A perfect cross from Ousmane Dembele found the Paris Saint-Germain star, who smashed the ball home with a powerful header.

Shortly afterwards, Giroud completed his brace, making it 4-1 for his side. In addition to equaling Henry’s record, Giroud also registered France’s first World Cup win with more than three goals.

Deschamps’ side had more than a few chances to extend their lead but eventually settled for the 4-1 win. Both sides will return to action on Saturday. Giroud and co will take on Denmark while Australia meet Tunisia.
