After a goalless draw vs Spain, the former Real Madrid player is ready to achieve the top prize for Portugal.

Portugal center-back Pepe is setting up a target for World Cup 2022 glory in Qatar. Subsequently, the defender will turn 39 years old then.

The former Real Madrid man plays with FC Porto currently. Evidently, he appeared 111 times for Portugal after his debut game in 2007.

Pepe battled in three World Cups and three European Championships for his nation. Consequently, Portugal won the Euro 2016 against France beating them 1-0.

The Portuguese cleared the ball 12 times during the game along with three crucial blocks to keep France away from victory. As a result, Pepe received the man of the match award for his amazing performance.

At the moment, there is tough competition for a place in Fernando Santos’ team. Moreover, Pepe started the game against Spain this week along with Ruben Semedo. However, he left the field at half time by Manchester City defender Ruben Dias.

Never too old for glory.

In any case, Pepe is completely ready to play the next World Cup. The tournament begins three months before his 40th birthday.

“You never know,” he told reporters ahead of Portugal’s Nations League match with France. “I’m focused on the next game, which is the most important.

“I know how old I am but also what I can give. I’m happy to see there are young people who can contribute to the national team.

“There’s a lot of quality and we all have to do our best at our clubs so that, when it’s time for the team to be chosen, we are all available to help.”

Portugal goalkeeper Anthony Lopes will not play on the weekend. Unfortunately, he tested positive for COVID-19.

Although, Pepe confirmed that the pandemic situation will not affect the mentality of the players.

“This is our reality. This is the way the world is and we know what can happen. We are prepared,” he said.

“It’s not just a situation in football. When we go out onto the pitch, we don’t think about it, only about winning and helping the national team. That’s how I think and I believe my team-mates do, too.”
