Dutch defender Royston Drenthe has been declared bankrupt by the Zeeland-West Brabant District Court. The player said he didn’t attend the hearing because his lawyer was on vacation.
Drenthe has had financial difficulties before, after wage disputes at both Real Madrid and Hercules. Therefore, with news of his bankruptcy breaking out, he told Voetbalzone he’s not easily frightened by these things.
“I don’t know the ins and outs and I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but if this is what I think it is, it’s not that important,” he claimed. “I’m always under a magnifying glass, but it will be resolved as it should.”
Royston Drenthe hasn’t had an easy career. He was dubbed a ‘wonderkid’ after joining Real Madrid in 2007, but after a few seasons, the player got pushed to the sidelines. He received heavy criticism for his lifestyle, and many believe that’s what ended his career.
Following a negative spell at Everton, the player admitted he was to blame for his falling out with the club and David Moyes, currently managing West Ham.
“Now I can’t believe I blew it at Everton. It is one of the most fantastic clubs in the Premier League. My attitude and poor mentality are the reasons I ruined my career there.”
In 2016, Drenthe announced he was retiring from football to pursue a career in the music industry. It seems the football world had let him down.
The new Dutch rapper went on to release several singles that granted him thousands of hits on YouTube. As Roya2Faces emerged, the musician also made his acting debut on a Dutch TV crime drama called Mocro Maffia this year.
Two years later he received a proposal from the Tweede Divisie’s Sparta Rotterdam and decided to make his return to the football field. Drenthe played 32 matches and scored five times to help Sparta return to the Eredivisie. However, he is currently playing for Kozakken Boys in the Dutch third tier.
