A report from last weekend linked CR7 with a surprise move to Chelsea for next season.

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has warned Cristiano Ronaldo that moving to Stamford Bridge will ‘burn his bridges’ at Manchester United.

A report from The Athletic on Saturday linked CR7 with a switch to London. His agent, Jorge Mendes, discussed a possible transfer with Chelsea’s new co-owner, Todd Boehly, during a meeting in Portugal last week.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is one of several superstars linked with the Blues recently.

‘Signing CR7 is like signing a commercial deal’

But Johnson doesn’t believe Ronaldo will make a big difference on the pitch, suggesting the 37-year-old would be more of a marketing ploy for Boehly as a marquee signing.

“If he [Ronaldo] goes to Chelsea, then he’d burn his bridges at Manchester United,” the Englishman told GGRecon.

“From Chelsea’s perspective, he’s a massive brand and he may be expensive, but you’d probably make that money back in two weeks through shirt sales. He may cost a fortune, but the club would probably make more by just having him. Signing Ronaldo is like signing a commercial deal.

“I don’t think Ronaldo can change Chelsea’s fortunes as a player now, but I think having him in the dressing room would. On the pitch now, he’s not the Ronaldo we all want to see, but him being in the dressing room will get another 5% out of everyone around him.”

As things stand, Manchester United expect Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford for next season despite the forward’s concerns over the club’s transfer activity so far this summer.
