‘Football can be cruel’ – France Euro 2020 elimination pains Pogba

The Manchester United midfielder has issued a statement on social media following the upset on the international stage.

Paul Pogba insists “football can be cruel” as he reflects on France’s elimination from Euro 2020.

With the scoreline showing 3-1 as the match entered its final 10 minutes, France thought they had the win in the bag against Switzerland in the Round of 16. But Switzerland were determined not to be denied as they netted twice in quick succession to force the game into extra time.

It required penalties as the two sides were inseparable after 120 minutes of action in National Arena, with France ultimately ending up on the wrong side of the 5-4 scoreline.

The 2018 World Cup winners crashing out of the tournament served as a great shock for fans and neutrals alike, especially considering the were widely tipped as favorites to go all the way through.

Pogba wrote in an Instagram post: “Sometimes football can be cruel… cruel and also beautiful.

“Yesterday, the game brought us sadness but happiness to our opponents. That’s the beauty of football.

“Of course we all wished that we could have had a positive result.

“Thank you so much to all of our fans across the globe. It was beautiful to see you, to hear you, and to celebrate with you.

“You gave us hope and joy throughout all of our games. We will keep our heads up and we will come back stronger.

“Finally, I want to wish congratulations to Switzerland.”
