Last season’s Copa Libertadores winners have made a change in the dugout after a disappointing campaign in 2023.
Former Brazil boss Tite has replaced Jorge Sampaoli as the new Flamengo manager.
Tite, who left the Brazilian national team at the end of the 2022 World Cup, has inked a contract until December 2024. This will leave him in charge for the rest of the 2023 campaign, as well as all next season.
The 62-year-old’s appointment is the fourth managerial change Flamengo have made this season.
The Scarlet-Black previously fired Victor Pereira in April and sacked Sampaoli in September. Mario Jorge has been appointed interim coach twice.
Jorge’s last game in charge was the 1-1 draw at Corinthians at the weekend. The result left Flamengo in fifth place in the Brazilian league, with 44 points from 26 games. They are two points off second-placed Bragantino and a further nine points behind leaders Botafogo.
Flamengo, who won the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brazil in 2022, are set to go trophyless.
Their Copa Libertadores title defense ended in a last-16 exit to Olimpia. They also lost the Copa do Brasil final to Sao Paulo and finished third in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Flamengo now turn to Tite, who brings a wealth of experience to the dugout. The Brazilian previously led Corinthians to glory with a Copa Libertadores title and a Club World Cup crown in 2012.
The first challenge in his new role will be a match against Cruzeiro scheduled for October 19.
