According to a report from Sport, FC Barcelona can still get a massive payday for Luis Suarez from Atletico Madrid by the end of the season.
When Luis Suarez left FC Barcelona to play for Atletico Madrid, he didn’t exactly leave for free. There are some important clauses on his contract that seem to be working at the moment and the Catalan club will collect a major payday for that. When Josep Maria Bartomeu sold him to the Colchoneros, he didn’t expect the star striker to deliver these results. Initially, the Blaugranas sold Suarez because he was supposedly finished as a player.
They never stopped for a second to think about how great Diego Simeone’s work can be with veteran players in the twilight of their career. Instead, Barcelona agreed on a fixed price for the player but three different amounts in variables if Suarez reached certain targets. Sport reported the details of the deal in a recent in-depth analysis that surprised even the player.
Suarez refused to be sold to Atletico Madrid.
When the deal was made between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, Luis Suarez refused to be sold to the Colchoneros. He would only arrive as a free transfer as per his own wishes. However, Josep Maria Bartomeu was sneaky with him again by striking a deal with the club from the Spanish capital. The Colchoneros ended up paying €5 million plus six more in variables.
First, Atletico would pay €2 million if Luis Suarez played more than 20 games during his first season with the club. They would pay another €2 million if the club reached the UEFA Champions League quarter finals. And finally, they will pay another €2 million if the Colchoneros reached the same stage next season. So far, Atletico Madrid has already paid €9 million to Barcelona and could pay a total of €11 million for Suarez’s transfer.
