Both tournaments will see their number of participants grow dramatically in their upcoming editions.
Gianni Infantino has confirmed the next edition of the Club World Cup will feature 32 teams.
The FIFA president addressed the media for the first time since his controversial remarks at the World Cup’s outset.
Following a FIFA Council meeting on Friday, the governing body has decided to revisit the 2026 tournament’s format. FIFA has also confirmed their decision to expand the Club World Cup.
The tournament currently features the champions of top-tier continental tournaments. But the new version will see 32 teams from across the globe compete for the title.
“It will be a Club World Cup of 32 teams, every four years, and the first edition will be summer of 2025,” he said. “They will be the best teams in the world invited to participate.”
FIFA have already announced 48 teams will compete in the 2026 tournament.
The governing body initially decided to use 16 groups of three teams. But Infantino suggests they might continue with groups of four.
“I have to say, after this World Cup and the success of groups of four and looking at other competitions such as the Euros, here [four-team groups] have been incredible,” he added
“I think we have to revisit or at least re-discuss the format. This is something that will certainly be on the agenda.”
