Russia have been officially kicked out of the 2022 World Cup scheduled to take place in Qatar.

FIFA have confirmed that Russia have been officially kicked out of the 2022 World Cup with Poland set to advance to the playoff final.

Football’s governing body made the decision to remove Russia from the tournament following their invasion of Ukraine last month.

Poland were due to face Russia in the semi-final of the playoff, but following the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Polish FA and players made it clear that they did not want to face Russia.

A statement from FIFA read (via the Mirror): “Subsequent to the decision of 28 February 2022 taken jointly with the UEFA Executive Committee to suspend all Russian teams from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice, the Bureau of the FIFA Organising Committee decided that Poland will receive a bye to the final of Path B due to take place on 29 March 2022, in which they will face the winners of the match between Sweden and the Czech Republic.”

UEFA also removed Spartak Moscow were removed from the Europa League while the governing body also severed ties with Russian energy company, Gazprom.

The Russia Football Union (RFU) have, however, launched an appeal to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) following the bans imposed by UEFA and FIFA.

Russia’s national teams were banned from participating in international tournaments, with the RFU claiming last week it would file a lawsuit against the two governing bodies.

The RFU have released a statement of their own, stating: “The RFU will demand the restoration of all men’s and women’s national teams of Russia in all types of football in the tournaments in which they took part (including in the qualifying round of the World Cup in Qatar), as well as compensation for damage.

“In order to ensure the possibility of the participation of Russian teams in the next scheduled matches, the RFU will insist on an expedited procedure for considering the case.”
