Portugal boss Fernando Santos has made a decision on whether Ronaldo would remain as captain of the national side.

Fernando Santos has defended Ronaldo from recent criticism, while insisting the 36-year-old would remain as captain of the Portugal side.

CR7 was wrongly denied a winner in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Serbia on Saturday. Replays showed the ball more than crossed the line and should have been counted as a clear goal.

However, Ronaldo did not take that decision and showed his fury after the game. CR7 threw his captain’s armband down and stormed off the pitch after seeing the goal chalked of.

Given his position as Portugal captain, many feel Ronaldo was excessive in his frustrations, with former international teammate Fernando Meira among those to have criticized the Juventus star.

However, Fernando Santos has defended CR7, saying it was only a moment of ‘frustration’.

He said as per Football Italia: “It was just a moment of frustration. Cristiano will remain the captain. He is an example for everyone.”

“If he had offended the coach or his teammates, we would have thought about it, but nothing of this happened.

“He always wants to win, and he was very frustrated. He gives everything to his national team.

“He published a social media post ten minutes after the game, but nobody says it was nice from him.”
