Bruno Fernandes has sent out a strong message to Jose Mourinho and other critics who say he is all about scoring penalties.

Bruno Fernandes has come out to defend himself amidst growing reputation of him as a ‘penalty merchant’.

The Portuguese midfielder was highly influential for the Red Devils since he joined the club in January.

In his 14 Premier League appearances, Fernandes scored eight goals and contributed with seven assists.

But not many were convinced even after his exploits. Of his ‘many’ goals, a good number of them came from the penalty spot. If you think it’s a coincidence, United set a record 14 penalties awarded in a single Premier League season.

A certain Jose Mourinho was one of the top figures that publicly took a jibe at Fernandes for always scoring penalties and nothing more. On social media, fans even took to his new name as ‘Penandes’.

Bruno Fernandes doesn’t agree with those penalty claims and came out to set the record straight on his numbers.

Speaking to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Fernandes said: “It was a good impact, because we managed to reach the Champions League and now our goals have to be different, because we have not won any trophy.

“I hear people saying, ah, he only scores from penalty kicks. But a little while ago, I saw the statistics and, except for penalties, only Kevin de Bruyne has a higher involvement in goals than me in England when it comes to midfielders.”

Bruno Fernandes also responded to the direct swipe from his countryman Mourinho.

“I honestly did not feel stung, I feel that I am a good penalty taker and nothing more, I understand, but what I take from his words, because I’m a very positive person, is that he said I hit penalties well.”

“It is a reality, not least since I arrived at Manchester United.”

A new season awaits and no doubt Fernandes will keep doing what he does best even if it means scoring more and more penalties.
