Dean Henderson has proved himself with Sheffield United, putting pressure on David de Gea’s unchallenged dominion at Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson believed in David de Gea and the Spaniard proved him right. After the legendary Scotsman’s departure, it was De Gea who ensured the Red Devils ended seasons in respectable positions.
His form has deserted him off late with many questioning his number one status at Old Trafford. Dean Henderson’s rise has further complicated matters at the club.
With Sergio Romero leaving for pastures new and Henderson contending for starting role, De Gea is under pressure.
Rio Ferdinand shared the dressing room with the Spanish custodian and holds him in high regard. The retired Three Lions defender believes De Gea has slipped in his performances but can get back to his best.
Ferdinand also hit back at the goalkeeper’s detractors. He pointed at the numerous player of the year accolades he has accumulated at Old Trafford to make his point.
“De Gea has the ability to get back to where he was,” Ferdinand tole teamTALK.
“He’s shown over the years that he is a class act. He can now have a break for a few weeks and come back with his focus renewed.
“He has the mentality to come back and reach his levels again. We’ve seen time and again how good he can be. I think he can still be a big player for United, but he has a point to prove again now. He has had tough times before and has come back.
“He’s a great goalkeeper and over the years he has been fantastic for United.
“He was player of the year four out of six years or whatever it was, but if you are not producing the goods over an extended period of time you have to be told and there has to be someone waiting in the wings to come in.”
