Cristiano Ronaldo’s omission from the Premier League Player of the Season shortlist is ‘laughable’, according to Rio Ferdinand.
Despite scoring 18 Premier League goals during a dreadful season for Manchester United, Ronaldo wasn’t one of the nominated eight stars for the English league’s Player of the Season.
Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Son Heung-min (Tottenham), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Joao Cancelo (Man City), Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jarrod Bowen (West Ham), and Kevin De Bruyne (Man City) made the cut instead.
‘CR7 should be in ahead of three or four of those guys’
But Ferdinand can’t understand how Arsenal winger Saka and ‘three or four’ unnamed players earned a nomination ahead of his old teammate.
“Saka’s in the in the Player of the Year nominees?” the former Red Devils defender asked on his Vibe with Five podcast.
“I wouldn’t have had Saka in there yet, as well as he’s done. I wouldn’t have had him over Ronaldo, no, not this season.
Ferdinand added: “Ronaldo should be in ahead of three or four of those guys in there.
“He probably doesn’t win it but in terms of nominees, it’s laughable. He’ll take it as a disrespect but these are the things that fuel him, he’ll be thinking, ‘how dare you?’.
“If it’s based on stats, he’s like, ‘I’ve banged in more goals than most of them on that list other than Salah, so what are you talking about?'”
Ronaldo will hope to add more goals to his tally this Sunday when Manchester United visit Crystal Palace for their final game of the season.
