During a recent show on his Youtube channel, Rio Ferdinand explained his reasoning for not including Alan Shearer in his EPL Hall of Fame.

Perhaps nobody gave Rio Ferdinand the memo of Alan Shearer as a bonafide Premier League legend. Although he only won the one title with Blackburn Rovers in 1995, Shearer is still the all-time top scorer of the tournament. Those 260 goals didn’t score themselves but Rio Ferdinand doesn’t seem to think that’s enough. Shearer was just named as one of two confirmed Premier League Hall of Fame inductees.

There is already a list that came out of potential new members. But Alan Shearer was one of the first to be included for obvious reasons. We are talking about the player whose goal-scoring record still looks impossible to reach. Perhaps Harry Kane will be able to get there someday if he remains in England but that’s not even a certainty these days. So, Rio Ferdinand made his point to why he doesn’t consider Alan Shearer inside his Top 10 of the Premier League’s Hall of Fame.

Rio Ferdinand makes his point in Shearer.

It’s true, perhaps Alan Shearer didn’t win as many Premier League titles as other players in the tournament did. Gareth Bale shouldn’t be on the list because he never won the trophy. Steven Gerrard sadly never won it either and he probably doesn’t make every list. However, we are talking about players who made a profound impact in English football despite not winning the title.

In Shearer’s case, he did win at least once when he played for Blackburn Rovers. But that still doesn’t seem to be enough for Rio Ferdinand as he said on his Youtube channel: “It’s hard not to put Steve Gerrard in (the list) because my criteria I’m going on is winning the Premier League and consistency. That’s why Gareth Bale or Barry doesn’t get in, and Alan Shearer wouldn’t get in my first 10 – they were great but as great as they were they didn’t win enough for me.”
