Rio Ferdinand knows why Rasmus Hojlund is struggling to score goals for Manchester United and which players could help fix the problem.
Jarrod Bowen, Michael Olise, Jack Harrison, Dwight McNeil, and Jacob Murphy could help improve Rasmus Hojlund’s goal record, according to former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.
Despite a record of five goals in five Champions League games, Hojlund is yet to score in the Premier League. The €75 million summer signing from Atalanta has gone 12 games without scoring. Ferdinand reckons this is because of a lack of service down the flanks from the wingers.
Speaking on Vibe With Five, Ferdinand said: “If Man United had Olise, Jack Harrison, McNeil at Everton, Jacob Murphy at Newcastle – any one of those four wingers, I reckon he [Hojlund] would have five or six goals by now.
“Why? Because they cross the ball. All four of those boys, their first thought is, get the ball, head down, either beat the full-back and cross or give me a yard and cross the ball.
“Hojlund needs service. Bowen [is another who would help Hojlund]. These guys want to provide, we’ve got wingers who either want to get a shot off, shoot, beat someone.”
Out of the five wingers Ferdinand listed, Bowen has had the most impressive season so far. The West Ham United attacker has produced nine goals and one assist in 15 Premier League games.
That said, Bowen extended his contract at West Ham until 2030 in October and stated a desire to stay at the club for the rest of his career.
Olise, who had Chelsea on his radar last summer, also signed a new contract at Crystal Palace until 2027 in August.
Harrison, on the other hand, is on a season-long loan deal at Everton from Leeds United, while McNeil and Murphy are under contract at Everton and Newcastle until 2027 respectively.
