After knowing about the two-match ban from the Spanish Football Federation, FC Barcelona made a decision about Leo Messi’s punishment.
Leo Messi just got a two-match ban for the red card he received against Athletic Club in the Spanish Supercup and FC Barcelona just reacted. The Catalan club obviously is going to side with the player in complete disagreement with the decision. In their view, Leo should only get a single match as it’s established by the protocol because he didn’t hurt the opponent on purpose.
Despite having clear images, the club considers more aspects that need to be taken into consideration in Messi’s punishment. First of all, this is Messi’s first-ever red card as a Barcelona player. There is no previous record of him doing things like this. But more importantly, they clearly consider Messi was simply reacting to several fouls he got throughout the final and didn’t get them called.
Barcelona will appeal to the ban this week.
FC Barcelona released an official statement in which they explain why they completely disagree with the Spanish Football Federation’s decision to punish Messi with two games. These matches will affect both the Copa del Rey and the Spanish La Liga. “FC Barcelona is to appeal the suspension issued to Leo Messi.
“The Competition Committee announced on Tuesday that the Argentinian’s red card in the final minutes of the Spanish Super Cup Final against Athletic Club shall incur a two-match ban. It was the first time that Messi had ever been sent off while playing for FC Barcelona. The referee’s report describes the motivation thus: ‘Striking an opponent with his arm with excessive force while the ball was in play but not within a playable distance’.”
