Former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas has revealed what the players think of Mikel Arteta and gave his verdict on the Spaniard’s future.

Cesc Fabregas has claimed the Arsenal players ‘really enjoy playing’ under manager Mikel Arteta. He also stated the squad train well and feel prepared.

Arteta has endured mixed fortunes in his first-ever managerial role. He got off to a flying start upon replacing Unai Emery in December 2019 by leading Arsenal to FA Cup and Community Shield glory. Things soon went downhill, however, in his first full campaign. The Gunners were left trophyless in 2020/21 and a dismal eighth-place Premier League finish cost them European football for next season.

This has prompted questions over whether Arteta, who is still only 39 years old, is the right man to lead Arsenal.

But with the respect of the squad and board behind him, along with a first-class education as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Fabregas is confident Arteta can rise to the challenge.

“He’s a guy that loves football. He knows what he’s doing. He’s got a clear idea of where he wants to go,” the former Gunners captain told talkSPORT.

“Even now, if you speak to some of the players, they will tell you that they really enjoy playing under him, that the trainings are well, that they feel prepared and they know what they’re doing.”

Fabregas added: “He was very lucky in terms of being next to Pep for I don’t know how many years exactly but it was like super preparation for a young coach.

“I mean if I could have the chance to do something like that, I think I could grab it without any question because it’s like doing a masters when you are only finishing high school.

“It’s a difficult job, it really is [because of] where he got the club and where the aim is that Arsenal should be, but I think Edu and the board believe a lot in him and hopefully he can be the man to bring this team forward.”

Arteta remains under contract with Arsenal until the summer of 2023.
