Man United were dumped out of the FA Cup after losing to Middlesbrough on penalties.

Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup after losing 7-8 on penalties to Middlesbrough in the fourth round on Friday.

Chris Wilder’s side held on to take the Red Devils to extra time and beyond where United youngster Anthony Elanga missed a crucial spot-kick in an intense shoot-out at Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty during the first half when Paul Pogba was brought down by Anfernee Dijksteel in the 20th minute.

Jadon Sancho scored soon after to give the hosts the lead but a rather controversial second-half goal from Wilder’s side saw the scores level as the game headed into extra time.

Boro defender Paddy McNair, a former United player, told ITV: “We started the first half slow, but the second half we played really well. We deserved the equaliser.

“United weren’t taking their chances and that gave us a bit of a lift. Ronaldo’s penalty was a big moment too. I had seven very good years here, but it’s a brilliant feeling.”
